Rustic River Leather Photo Album

Author Thomas | 28.09.2009 | Category Accessories

We live in a world of speed and ever evolving technology.  Obviously (as evidenced through the posts), I like technology, but I also really enjoy the classic, traditional, and old fashioned things in life.  Wouldn’t it be great to have a tract of land to farm with a large house…and high speed Internet, Google Android Phones, etc.?

Anyway, in this techno world that we live in, it’s become more and more easy to take pictures and store them.  I’ve found myself taking more and more pictures and simply storing them on my computer.  There’s really no constraint other than hard drive size, so away I snap.

More recently, I’ve begun storing pictures in photo albums.  There’s just something special (how quaint), about viewing pictures in an album.  Recently we took a horseback riding trip, and I wanted a great place to store the pictures.  The Rustic River Leather Photo Album hits the spot perfectly.

I got the Dark Brown Version (pictured is the Saddle Brown), and oddly enough, I found a spot for it on the mantel, and it looks great.  The leather is very rustic.  It’ll show marks and dings, but that’s part of the style.  However, I’m still pretty careful with it.  The album holds 100 4×6 pictures and is hand sewn.

The inside of the album is similar to a regular photo album.  It’s the outer construction that makes all the difference.  It takes a few tries to get the leather wrap knot correct.

So in our high-paced, ever changing world, it feels great to do something a little old fashioned.

The Leather Money Clip

Author Thomas | 22.08.2009 | Category Accessories, Apparel

I’ve used the same wallet for years.  The leather wore down to the fabric underneath in many places.  It was also a little bulky (not so much from cash but from extra storage space for cards).  I had the library card, bank cards, FedEx card (of all things), etc., etc., and it had an extra flap for a driver’s license and two other cards.  In other words, my old wallet was quite bulky.

I decided to try simplify and go for something new by trying a money clip.  I purchased the Dark Brown version on the money clip below and have liked it over my old wallet quite a bit because the money clip is more compact.

I do have to work a little bit to get some of the cards out, but as I really only use a couple of cards regularly, it isn’t that much of an issue.  Some day, I imagine, we’ll use our phones for credit transactions, identification, or perhaps our fingerprints, but until then, the good ol’ fashioned money clip works just great for me.

The Rustic Leather Money Clip can be purchased at Rustic Country Leather with free shipping (last time I checked).

New Leather Composition Notebook from Rustic River Leather

Author Thomas | 19.06.2009 | Category Accessories

I find myself taking notes on just about everything.  I’ll grab receipts, scraps of paper, etc. to write down very important things…and then…I lose the paper.  Who’d-a-thunk?

A while back, I started using portfolio pads, and they were great except for the paper flipped vertically and it was hard to look up notes when you used both sides.

Now I’m exploring a whole new frontier in notetaking…an actual notebook!  And if you’re going to get a notebook, get one with style!

We got the Leather Composition Notebook by Rustic River Leather, and it’s great.

The notebook is actually a leather cover that is refillable.  The refills can be picked up for a couple bucks or less and are standard-sized.

Below is a picture of the composition notebook refill.  You can pick them up at Wal-mart, Amazon, or just about any office/stationary supply store:

Composition Notebook

What’s great about this is that it can be used over and over again (won’t fill up).

Video demo:

The leather is very thick and rustic. Hope to get a lot of use out of this one and hopefully save all those scraps of paper from suffering untimely loses!

Who’d have thunk a  Leather Notebook could be so cool!

Flameless – Wickless Scented Wax Candles

Author Thomas | 17.03.2009 | Category Home & Garden

The world is all a-rage with Scentsy Candles because they’re wickless, have a unique design and are somewhat safer than regular candle warmers or wicked candles. There are however a number of alternatives if you’re set on getting a candle that actually looks like a candle but isn’t as dangerous as a candle warmer.

Wickless LED candles can provide the perfect candlelight atmosphere without the danger and smoke of wick burning candles.  We purchased a 3 pack of candles that are LED powered and are quite impressed.

The candles make a great addition to the home decor and are great for dinners, parties, etc. A few more things we like are that the candles:

  • Flicker like real candles
  • Will last for hundreds of hours on 2 AA batteries
  • Do not heat up
  • Have a Vanilla Scent (it’s not strong, but there, and probably better than nothing)
  • The LED light is hidden within the wax about half way down into the candle
  • Make a great flashlight at night if you need to go and check on the kids without turning on the lights
  • Are portable

Because the candles are so portable and safe, they take you back a couple hundred years when candlelight was the “light bulb” and flashlight of the day.  We’ve found ourselves turning on the candle at night and taking it down the stairs to check on something at night rather than flipping all the lights on and going blind.  The candles are fun to use and the kids like them at times instead of a night light.  There are a variety of candles such as these; the three-pack is nice for the cost savings. The wickless candles are available here with free shipping.

Natural Spectrum HappyLite

Author Thomas | 16.03.2009 | Category Home & Garden

The new Natural Spectrum HappyLite from Verilux is a great way to brighten a room.  Not to make too much fun, but  Seasonal Affective Disorder is the condition of feeling down or blue during the winter months and the acronym is S.A.D.  You’ve got to love whoever thought that one.  It’s also humorous that the light is called the “Happy” light to combat the effects of S.A.D.

Anyway, the lights do help to brighten up a room.  We’ve done some limited testing with normal fluorescent lights (which give off a yellow hue), white fluorescent lights, and the HappyLite.  The HappyLite and the white fluorescent lights were amazing compared to the regular energy saving fluorescent bulbs.  Even regular light bulbs give off a yellow hue.  The white light from the HappyLite emits a bright white light more similar to what you would see shining in to a room through a window on a sunny day.

The lights come in a 2-pack and are pretty bright, so position them however seems best in your room or office.  One funny thing was that after we got our lights, we saw the same ones in our doctor’s office a week later.

ShelfReliance CanSolidator Pantry Review

Author Thomas | 02.03.2009 | Category Home & Garden

ShelfReliance Cansolidator Pantry CanSolidator Pantry
Dimensions:
Height: 11″
Width: 20″
Depth: 16.5″
Capacity: 40 Cans

The ShelfReliance CanSolidator Pantry is a great way to store food cans.  But who would want to store food cans?  Katrina, Hugo, Tornadoes, Earthquakes, Downsizing…ring any bells?  Storing food is a smart idea in preparation for difficult times.  It’s also just a good idea to have some food on hand for those crazy cooking moods you might get in.  You many just need something that comes in a can.

The CanSolidator can help you stay stocked with food because it makes it easy to see where you’re running low.  We recently purchased a CanSolidator and were amazed when we went to fill it just how low we were on a certain food type.  It was hard to see previously because our cans were stacked one on top of the other.  We purchased the CanSolidator Pantry, but will probably upgrade to the Pantry Plus soon because our shelves are wide and can fit more.

The product is a Food Rotation System or FRS for short.  Using First in First out or FIFO, cans are placed in the CanSolidator at the top level and then rotate down to the bottom level.  You remove cans from the bottom, thus using the oldest cans first.

A few thoughts and observations when we pulled it out of the box:

  • Assembly is required.  It’s not a big deal, but you have to put the pieces together to fit the width of cans you want to put in there.
  • Holds three full-sized cans and one medium can.  We weren’t able to fit 4 large soup cans in there, but we could fit 3 large cans and one medium cream of mushroom soup can.
  • Deep than expected.  The CanSolidator was deeper than we expected, but the “Pantry” fit in our Pantry just fine.  We also measured for the CanSolidator Cupboard and it would fit in our cupboards.  It looks like they were built to standard sizes.
  • Holds only 4 types of cans.  The Pantry model holds 40 cans but only 4 different types of cans (10 of each).  So, after we set it up, we thought, “Hmmm.  We need another one.”
  • Better in earthquakes and other natural disasters.  We noticed as we were moving our cans around prior to putting them in the CanSolidator, that our cans on the shelf can be knocked off very easily.  Once we put them in the CanSolidator, it was hard to get them to just fall out.  This is an advantage because if you think of any natural disasters that might shake your house a little bit, your stacked cans would fall over, break, or otherwise be compromised.  The big problem is that it’s in the natural disasters when you might need your cans the most!  Shaking the CanSolidator, we saw that the cans weren’t going to go anywhere.  The very top cans if filled up to the edge might fall, but not very much more than that.
  • Space utilization.  It seems that we could fit more cans on our shelf if they were simply stacked instead of in the CanSolidator, but we like the CanSolidator because it helps us to better manage food cans, it looks so much better on the shelf than a bunch of stacked cans, and it’s cool.
  • Stackable.  The CanSolidator is stackable.  In fact, the Pantry can be split into two separate units.
  • Expandable.  The rotation system can be exapanded with more peices or hooked together with additional Cansolidators.
  • Helps to monitor food storage levels.  We really like that we can see at a quick glance if we’re running low on food storage items.
  • Helps rotate through food stock.  The CanSolidator helps us use the oldest cans first.  If you think about it, stacking cans usually hides the oldest cans in the back and bottom of the pile.

Overall, we really like the CanSolidator Pantry, and will be getting more soon.

Bellagio-Italia CD / DVD Storage Album

Author Thomas | 24.02.2009 | Category Accessories, Electronics

The Bellagio-Italia CD / DVD Storage Binder by HandStands is a great tool for freeing up space in your entertainment center.  We have about 6-7 of these, and they’re fantastic.  Our shelves look so much better having swapped out all of our DVD cases and placing the DVDs into the binder.

HandStands Bellagio Italia CD / DVD Storage Binder

Since we really don’t use the DVD menu cards, we put in only the DVDs even though the binders can accommodate the menu cards.  We felt it was a waste of space to have those in there.

Video Demo from LLG

The binder is “3-ring” and holds 48 discs.  Extra pages can be ordered if you want to store more discs in a single album.  We’ve categorized our DVD binders into Kid Movies, Animated Movies, Adventure Movies, etc.  There’s a little bracket on the spine that lets you write what the binder holds.

The albums help protect the DVDs even better than the DVD cases (in our case) because our DVD cases tended to get tossed on the floor and stepped on by the kids.  The binders are sturdy, and stand up just fine on their own.

Old Town Leather Photo Album Holds 300 Pictures

Author Thomas | 11.04.2008 | Category Home & Garden

Photo Album - Holds 300 Pictures

There’s something about holding your pictures in your hand or in a photo album that you just can’t get by storing or viewing them on the computer.

It’s even easier now than ever to print your pictures whether at home from your own printer or through an online photo printing service that will mail your pictures to you (such as SnapFish by HP), but where to store all those prints?

Until recently, our household stored our pictures in the paper folder they came in, and it was high time to get something better.  For a lot of photos, we’d just keep them on the computer for viewing, but we still felt like storing the photos in a more classic way.

The Old Town photo album (pictured above) has plenty of space to hold pictures (300 4×6 inch photos) and includes room to hold 6 CDs (or DVD’s) that contain your pictures or even home movies.  We purchased a number of these albums to store family and vacation pictures.

The inside margin of each page has lines and space to write about each picture. The acid free pages will help protect pictures and preserve the memo notes about them in the margins. The leather covering and binding are great and should last a very, very long time.  The inside cover has a faux suede interior lining which is a nice touch.

A sleeve in the very back of the binder allows for storage for negatives or extra disks.

This Old Town Photo Album is available on LLgco.com.
